Yuko Shimizu

Hell-O-Kitty is a personal work created for a zine UNDO published by Black Dragon Press. (2021)
I have a very ordinary Japanese name that only sounds exotic in another language. There are hundreds of Yuko Shimizu in Japan, and we are not related. We were just given a mundane name.
After 2o+ years of illustrating professionally, I still get mixed up with the creator of Hello Kitty, who happened to have the same name (but not exactly the same Chinese characters in Japanese). Hello Kitty was created in the early 1970s, if anyone does a quick math it is very clear I cannot be the creator of the beloved cat.
I was never particularly into cute character designs, and I get frustrated every time another person gets us mixed up. I decided to put my frustration into a drawing.
