>> ILLUSTRATION SECTION MAKEOVER>>
I added so many images to "recent illustrations" section over the years it was getting out of control. I did a bit of a makeover. Now you can browse through images by category or by theme. School year has just ended at SVA, so I am planning on working more on my site over this summer. |

>> BE THE FIRST STORE TO CARRY YUKO PRODUCTS! >>
The first Yuko products are officially out from NookArt of Australia, and I am psyched! They are: a note card, a tri-fold wallet, and a blank journal you can use as sketch book. I especially love the wallet.
Now the products are done, we are looking for stores who want to carry them. |
 |
 |
 |
If you are a store interested in carrying the products, or have questions, please go to NookArt web site, and e-mail/call them directly. NookArt is for wholesale only, but they can pretty much ship to anywhere in the world.
If you are a store in New York City area, I would be happy to come by to show you the samples before you place an order to NookArt. Please call my studio or e-mail me to set up appointment. I won't make you disappointed!
Big thank you goes to Andres, Bev, Trent and Nova of NookArt. |

Society of Publication Designers' SPOTS judging is done. Thank you for everyone who applied. John Cuneo and Edel Rodriguez had such presence and impact, as always, but WOW.
Ai Tatebayashi, a very talented young illustrator, is officially back in New York. |

>> ON T-MOBILE, AND ON GETTING SICK.. >>
Just recovering from two weeks of tough cold/fatigue and probably a tightest deadline job I have ever worked on. I have just finished illustrating cover to cover of April issue of SPLASH!, a magazine for T-Mobile. If you happened to work for T-Mobile, I guess I (well, my work, to be exact) will see you sometime this month.
Thank you for everyone at Publicis Seattle, especially Yumiko Menikoff who worked together with me on phone, e-mail and even business trip to NY through the process. Hope you enjoy your time off in Japan. Big thank you to Wendi Koontz for helping me color some of the illustrations. You really saved my life and I owe you a big one!
>> DAHESH MUSEUM LECTURE IS DONE >>
Also, finished a lecture and tour at Dahesh Museum of Art last Saturday. It was a bit tough to prepare for a lecture and a tour of their latest show "Stories to Tell" while I was sick and dealing with tight deadlines, but thanks to super nice and friendly audience (including dear Marcos Chin and Mihoko Hakata) and Liz Gaudino of Education Department at Dahesh who helped me prepare, for making my experience smooth, easy and memorable. This wonderful show of history of American Illustration is open till May and there will be lecture and tour by illustrators every week, including my dear professor Thomas Woodruff.
By the way, those of you who have been looking for a good place to have English high tea in mid-town Manhattan, Cafe Opaline is the place to be!

You can read about the details, winners and judges here.
I wish I can go back in time and tell 12-year-old-scifi-fantasy-geek-me what is going to be happening this year.
And thank you everyone for coming to The Society Of Illustrators last week. Show will be up till April 1. |

>> AND, MORE JUDGING.. >>
Editorial illustrators, Society of Publication Designers' SPOTS competition call for entries is out now. Download the form here. I know it is the last minutes notice, but we would love to judge your great spot illustrations, so please apply!
Also, The Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition's first round is now done. Winners will be notified to each school, and awards will be decided by judging the actual winning pieces at the end of the month. Congratulations to the winners and good luck!
I want to thank all the 25 jury members, especially to those whom I invited who accepted to participate. Some of them came all the way from West Coast.
Illustrators: Shawn Barber, Harry Campbell, Joshua Gorchov, Lizzy Rockwell, Chris Sickels a.k.a. Red Nose Studio, Autumn Whitehurst and Bruce Waldman. Also nice meeting you, Adam Rex. Art directors: SooJin Buzelli of PLANSPONSOR and Henry Yung of Fast Company. Thank you so much everyone!
>> AND, MORE "THANK YOU"S >>
On March 8 Marcos Chin and I were invited to speak about illustration to 8th grade art class at Ballet Tech. Thank you Katie Yamasaki for having us in.
Thank you Lizzy Rockwell for coming into my SVA class and talk about children's books and working process. |
>> NEW BOOK, A LECTURE, AND FIRST YUKO PRODUCTS! >>
First,
I am giving a lecture and tour at Dahesh Museum of Art on March 25 (Sat) at 1PM.
It is a part of programs to accompany their current exhibition "Stories To Tell: Masterworks from The Kelly Collection of American Illustration", and free with regular museum admission. Please come by!
Second, a new book is coming out soon from Gingko Press. Andrea Lugli has edited a book of artwork that is "handmade", and it is called, well "Handmade". When I got invited, I turned it down because my work is half computer generated. Andrea said my work can still belong to this book for my all-hand-done-look. Check out Gingko Press web site to read more about it and see the amazing lineup.
Third, my first products will get released soon from NookArt of Australia. There will be a tri-fold wallet, a journal, and a greeting card. I will post more in details soon.

Spoke with readersvoice.com about books, art and illustration. That was a nice change of topics. Thank you, Simon Sandall. |

 |
The Society of Illustrators Editorial and Book show will open on March 3 (Fri) . Opening party is between 5:30 and 8PM at Museum of American Illustration at 128 East 63rd Street. I will have four pieces in this show including this image I did for PLAYBOY that had received Gold Medal. The show will be up for about a month.
My e-mail server was down between Feb. 19 and 20. I have lost most of the incoming messages during those two days. If you were expecting to hear back from me and not receiving reply, I may not have gotten it. Please send me your message again. Thank you! |
Some new press...
Thank you Computer Arts China (right) for doing a nice 6 page feature on my work in their December 2005 issue. Thank you Sue!
Another thanks goes to The Spy Magazine of Cadiz, Spain(far right) for their nice 5 page feature article on my work in their January-February 2006 issue. Thank you Arantxa!
There is also an interview article in Cultura Creativa 1492 (November 2005), an advertising magazine in Argentine, regarding "Target and New York" advertising campaign of past summer.
When I have a bit more time to rework on my web site, I am planning on making a "press page" to put all these articles and interviews in one place. I have been receiving so many e-mails from new illustrators and art students asking questions. A lot of them are on same topics. As my work gets busier and busier, it gets harder and harder to write back. Hope I can build a page to help answer a lot of their questions. |

| Just finished judging design category for The Art Directors Club's 85th Annual Awards, and I have to say it was one of the most inspiring and exciting experiences. Thank you so much for everyone at ADC for their hardwork, fellow judges for being so inspiring and kind, and Mr. Brian Collins of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide for choosing me to be there. It was also great to see wonderful designs from Japan, and I was happy I was able to help translate some of the works. The results will be announced in spring. |
| Some new illustrations... GQ, Outside, Domino (all March), Mother Jones (March/April), CIO Decisions (January) and Realms of Fantasy |

Happy (well, belated,) new year! After more than a month and half of laziness (OK, I was not lazy, I was just busy!), I finally updated my recent illustration page. If you have time, please take a look. Seven new illos are up, and also re-worked on awards section (because I got so excited for my gold medal, he he.)
A new book "it's A Matter Of Illustration" (published by Victionary) (left) is out now and I have six pages in there. Let me tell you that it is a stunning looking book, and I am not saying this because I am in. Beautifully and carefully designed, with that silver ink really adds to it.
My mentor and MFA professor Mister Mirko Ilic and my high school buddy Tatsuro Kiuchi are also featured. I will post some images from the book some other time. |
 |
Drew a small portrait for Joshua Gorchov, a good friend, great illustrator (left). PASTE magazine needed his portrait for the contributors' page and he wanted me to draw him instead of using photo. Is it in the recent issue?, I think..
Spring semester has just started at SVA this week. I am teaching two classes this semester (second year illustration and forth year promotion and marketing). Thank you Carol Fabricatore and all her students of MFA Illustration as Visual Essay program at SVA for inviting me as a guest lecturer today. I had FUN.
Some new illustrations... SPIN (January), Premiere and Outside (both February) |
